SOUTHGATE — An eighth-grader at Davidson Middle School shot and killed himself in a bathroom this morning, school officials said.

Students told The News-Herald Newspapers the teen said he was depressed because he was being bullied. One classmate, who said he spoke to the student prior to the shooting, said the teen said he was thinking of taking his life.

The school was placed on lockdown at about 8:30 a.m. Although school Supt. William Grusecki was unavailable for comment, his office said the lockdown was due to a “situation with a student.”

A press conference was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to address the situation.

News outlets are reporting the student shot himself in the head and left a note.

An eighth-grader inside the school said he was in class and heard a shot. He said the it sounded like glass breaking and a teacher rushed to a bathroom.

Students were visibly shaken as they were led out of the school. Parents were called to come and pick them up.

A teacher at nearby Asher School said staff there were told there was a “medical emergency” at Davidson. That school was not on an official lockdown, but doors were secured once police and emergency medical vehicles rushed to Davidson.

Many students at Asher, an alternative high school, took to the Internet and learned the incident appeared to be a suicide.

Some parents, who also heard from students that the incident was an apparent suicide, wondered how the student would have been able to bring a gun into the building.

The school is at 15800 Trenton Road.

Student commits suicide at Southgate’s Davidson Middle School

8th-grade boy found dead Thursday morning at school on Trenton Road in Southgate

    SOUTHGATE, Mich.

    Jamal Bransford, WDIV

Students swarmed to a candlelight vigil Thursday night after an 8th-grade student at Davidson Middle School in Southgate committed suicide during the morning at the school.

Superintendent William Grusecki said another student found the boy in a bathroom. He had died from a gunshot wound.

Director of Public Safety Thomas Coombs said investigators are still looking into who owned the handgun. He couldn’t answer whether any charges would be filed.

Local 4 later learned the gun belonged to a family member.

School was locked down, students sent home

Grusecki said the school was put on lock down while emergency crews responded.

Students were put in the gym and auditorium and parents were called to come pick up their children about 9 a.m. The school also arranged for transportation for students to get home.

Hundreds turned out for the vigil Thursday night at Southgate Anderson High School.

Watch: Southgate community shocked by student’s suicide

“I feel so horrible for the family of the child. I can’t even imagine,” said parent Sherri Zacharski

Grusecki said out of respect for the family, the boy’s name wouldn’t be released. But he said the boy was known as a good student, somewhat popular and had never gone to school officials with any problems he was experiencing.

Watch: Southgate superintendent: Counselors will be available

School was canceled for the day Thursday and will be closed Friday. Counselors are being provided for the community, some coming from surrounding districts.

“We’re just going to do our best to help our kids out and our staff,” Grusecki said.

He said all of the teachers and staff met together after the students had gone home.

“It got pretty emotional with the adults. They need a lot of support right now,” he said. “We could see it in their faces. It was difficult for all of us.”

When asked about how a gun got into the school, Grusecki said there are no metal detectors in the building. He said school officials will review and look into what they can do in the future.

The school is located at 15800 Trenton Road.
